ظرت محكمة جنايات القاهرة – الدائرة الثالثة إرهاب، والمنعقدة في مركز إصلاح وتأهيل مدينة بدر، اليوم، جلسة تجديد حبس رسام الكاريكاتير والصحفي أشرف عمر، على ذمة التحقيق في القضية رقم 1568 لسنة 2024 حصر تحقيق نيابة أمن الدولة العليا.

ويواجه عمر اتهامات متعددة تشمل:

• الانضمام إلى جماعة إرهابية،

• نشر أخبار وبيانات كاذبة،

• إساءة استخدام وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي،

• تلقي تمويل من الخارج لارتكاب جريمة إرهابية.

وكانت قوات الأمن قد ألقت القبض على أشرف عمر من منزله بتاريخ 22 يوليو 2024، وتم اقتياده إلى جهة غير معلومة، وظل قيد الإخفاء لمدة يومين قبل أن يظهر داخل سراي نيابة أمن الدولة العليا للتحقيق معه.

وخلال جلسة اليوم، طالب فريق الدفاع عن عمر بإخلاء سبيله بأي ضمان تراه المحكمة مناسبًا، مؤكدًا أن موكله “لم يرتكب أي جرم سوى ممارسة فن الكاريكاتير الساخر الذي يُعبر عن الأوضاع العامة في البلاد”.

Egyptian Cartoonist Ashraf Omar’s Pretrial Detention Renewed

The Third Circuit for Terrorism at the Cairo Criminal Court, convening at Badr Correctional and Rehabilitation Center, has renewed the pretrial detention of cartoonist and journalist Ashraf Omar in connection with Case No. 1568 of 2024, under investigation by the Supreme State Security Prosecution.

Omar faces a series of serious charges, including:

• Joining a terrorist organization,

• Spreading false news and information,

• Misuse of social media platforms,

• Receiving foreign funding to commit a terrorist act.

Security forces arrested Omar from his home on July 22, 2024, and held him incommunicado for two days before he appeared before the Supreme State Security Prosecution for interrogation.

During today’s hearing, Omar’s defense team requested his release under any guarantee deemed appropriate by the court, emphasizing that their client “is a cartoonist who has committed no crime, and that caricature art is a satirical form of expression reflecting societal realities.”

Ashraf Omar is known for his bold and critical cartoons tackling political and social issues in Egypt. His arrest has raised growing concerns among human rights and press freedom advocates regarding the targeting of artists and journalists under broad anti-terrorism laws.
